Love the notion of thought transfer. This is cool visually but not nearly technical enough.

How would you go about engineering it to work? Today and tomorrow I’m trying to learn CAD by shadowing a product designer friend, so share thoughts and I’ll take a stab at a rendering!

But until a more impressive method comes along, i guess we just have to rely on drawing, speaking, and writing?

The Science of Breakups

cheatsheet:

It turns out that the devastating pain we feel when we break up is not just emotional in nature. In fact, it closely mirrors the feeling one has when in withdrawal from several drugs. Imaging studies have found that the pain involved in a breakup is registered by the brain as real pain—similar areas of the brain light up after the collapse of a relationship as when we break a leg..

So, indeed, love hurts.

Someone I care about a lot supports Kazerooni’s research & has worked very hard on this intensely moving accomplishment for Austin Whitney as well as for the disability and robotics communities.

This is a staggering step. And makes me want to happy-cry.

22-year-old paraplegic college graduate, paralyzed since a 2007 car crash, used an exoskeleton to walk across the stage Saturday to receive his diploma. Austin Whitney, a history and political science major at the University of California-Berkeley, spent nine months working with Homayoon Kazerooni, creator of the HULC exoskeleton and the eLegs rehabilitation system.

Whitney used a controller switch on a walker to direct the exoskeleton, which was strapped around his legs. It swung his legs forward, moving him toward Chancellor Robert Birgeneau and a grinning Kazerooni.

Congrats the Austin, the class of 2011, and to Kazerooni’s team that worked long and hard on this innovation. Just imagine how many lives this can lift and give strength to.

“The mysterious moving stones of the packed-mud desert of Death Valley have been a center of scientific controversy for decades. Rocks weighing up to hundreds of pounds have been known to move up to hundreds of yards at a time. Some scientists have proposed that a combination of strong winds and surface ice account for these movements. However, this theory does not explain evidence of different rocks starting side by side and moving at different rates and in disparate directions. Moreover, the physics calculations do not fully support this theory as wind speeds of hundreds of miles per hour would be needed to move some of the stones.”

Oceanographer Paul Hargreaves and artist Faye Darling used an electron microscope to capture this image of a diatom – a tiny single-celled marine algae – that looks exactly like lips.
(submitted by anunrelatedthing)

not just lips— super rad modern poured plastic lips.
xx! kiss kiss! well designed ocean goo!
also, pretty inspiring to see an artist & scientist working together. very much a trend i think we’ll continue to see. science and art are inextricably linked in nature and the world needs data and beauty to be combined more often.

An anatomical heart made up entirely of the words from a dissertation. He put tons of effort into studying a particular cardiac arrhythmia, noted below the heart, and instead of hanging fancy diplomas on the wall, he chose to immortalize his time and efforts into a piece of anatomical art. (via Street Anatomy)

This is stunning! A great reminder that art and science don’t have to be mutually exclusive— in fact, they shouldn’t be: anatomy is art!

this is weird but visually interesting. it reminds me of the Bodies exhibit, which everyone seemed to love besides me.

SWANSON PYRAMID OF GREATNESS FTW!!!!!
SO MUCH EASIER THAN TRYING TO SNAPSHOT/ XEROX / TAKE NOTES OFF THE TV!!!!
The writers / art directors of this show are just brilliant and so hilarious. It’s pretty amazing when you see funny ideas so seamlessly rendered in visuals in general, but especially on televison (cough: from anyone not in advertising/ communications?? ha).
